Most Popular Types of Sex Toys by State

By 2025, the American sex toy market is predicted to be worth over a whopping $11 billion. People are buying toys more than ever, with an estimated 50% of adults owning or having used one, according to the TENGA Self Pleasure Report. The majority of sex toy owners are women, and range in age from their 20s to their 50s.

E-commerce has made shopping for sex toys much easier, too, creating more privacy, anonymity, and ease.

Ohdoki, the creators behind The Handy, surveyed 2,000 Americans to find out which sex toy was the most popular by state. What they found was somewhat surprising, with some states being kinkier than others.

If a sex toy was tied or there wasn’t enough data, the Ohdoki team used the most Googled sex toy for each state.

What is the most popular type of toy?

By far, vibrators are the most popular sex toy across the entire country, with 70% (35 out of 50) of states saying it was the most used sex toy.

Vibrators, in addition to sexual experiences, can improve the pelvic floor muscles and help with sexual function.

Dildos were second, with 20% revealing it was their choice in the bedroom. Dildos can make tissue in the vagina more flexible and reach the G-spot.

which state uses the most sex toys

Some states lean on creativity when it comes to reaching for their preferred toy.

Utah favors sex furniture more than any other state, despite the state’s conservative reputation. North Dakota tends to prefer strap ons while South Dakota reaches for butt plugs. New Mexico was the only state that preferred sensory toys like feather or wax play

Top 10 states that use the most sex toys include:

  • West Virginia – 89%
  • Utah – 88%
  • Kentucky – 85%
  • Washington – 83%
  • Alabama – 81%
  • Tennessee – 79%
  • Louisiana – 78%
  • Oklahoma – 78%
  • Minnesota – 76%
  • Oregon – 75%

states that use the most sex toys

Top 10 states that use sex toys the least include:

  • Alaska – 80%
  • Vermont – 75%
  • Delaware – 57%
  • Georgia – 46%
  • Iowa – 43%
  • Nebraska – 43%
  • New Hampshire – 43%
  • Wisconsin – 43%
  • Connecticut – 43%
  • New York – 40%

Alaska leads with people saying they have never used a sex toy, but New York, a surprising mention on the list, isn’t as adventurous as we may think. Despite New York City being known for its all-night clubs and vibrant social life, 40% of people in the state haven’t used a sex toy.

According to the survey, women still reign (84% vs 63% of men) when it comes to sex toy usage, however, men are starting to become more curious. Three in five men (60%) have ever used a sex toy, compared to women (72%).

The survey found that while only one in five men have ever used an automatic stroker, two in five are interested in trying it. Automatic strokers can stimulate a blowjob or intercourse.

However, taboos get in the way. As a result, men are twice as worried that their partner won’t be interested or comfortable in them using a stroker (21% vs 11% of women).

Nevertheless, slowly but surely, normalizing conversations around sex toys seems to be making strides, as more people are using sex toys overall in the country.

And this can be seen as a good thing since sex toys can benefit people for many reasons beyond reaching an orgasm.

The benefits of sex toys include:

  • Reduction in pain during intercourse, especially for those with dyspareunia
  • Enhanced arousal, addressing low libido or difficulty having an orgasm
  • Deceased stress
  • Treatment plan for premature ejaculation or erectile dysfunction
  • A deeper connection with your partner
  • Release of oxytocin

Sex toys can enhance partnered and solo sex, encourage experimentation with pleasure, and explore preferences. Breaking the stigma, for men and women, can enrich sexual wellness for all Americans.

In a few years, who knows what Americans will be grabbing for in their nightstands? Time can only tell.
